Biography

Shane Book is an Associate Professor in the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria, where he also serves as the Graduate Advisor. He holds multiple degrees including an MFA in Creative Writing from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, an MA in English American Literature from New York University, and an MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University. Book’s work reflects a rich confluence of poetry, filmmaking, screenwriting, and creative non-fiction, drawing inspiration from diverse influences such as the African diaspora, poetics, philosophy, and hip hop culture. His poetry collection, Ceiling Sticks, won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize and the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. His second collection, Congotronic, was recognized with the Archibald Lampman Award and was a finalist for various other prestigious awards. An accomplished writer, his works have been translated into Italian and Chinese and featured in numerous anthologies and magazines across North America and beyond. In addition to his literary pursuits, Book has taught at prestigious institutions like Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley and has served as Writer-in-Residence at several colleges. His film Dust has been screened at numerous film festivals around the world.
