Biography

Shane Vogel is a Professor of English and African American Studies at Yale University, where he also serves as the Chair of Theater Performance Studies. His research and teaching interests encompass performance studies, theater history, African American literature and performance, Black existentialisms, and the Harlem Renaissance. Vogel is the author of significant works including 'Scene Harlem Cabaret: Race, Sexuality, Performance' (University of Chicago Press, 2009) and 'Stolen Time: Black Fad Performance Calypso Craze' (University of Chicago, 2018), which received the John W. Frick Award from the American Theater and Drama Society. He co-edited the book 'Race, Performance, Repetition' with Soyica Diggs Colbert and Douglas Jones Jr. (Duke University Press, 2020), which won the Errol Hill Award from the American Society for Theatre Research. Shane's scholarly contributions have been supported by various prestigious organizations, including the Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Center and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Prior to his tenure at Yale, he was the Ruth N. Halls Professor of English and the Director of the Cultural Studies Program at Indiana University, where he made significant contributions to the fields of African American Studies and Performance Studies.
