Biography

Shani Tobias is a lecturer in Translation Studies at Monash University, where she also serves as the Education Coordinator for the Monash Intercultural Lab. She has been the Director of the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies since 2020 and has extensive experience in literary cultural translation and translation pedagogy. Dr. Tobias completed her PhD in Japanese-English literary translation, focusing on the exploration of translation metaphor and style. With over 20 years as a NAATI-certified translator, she has contributed significantly to the fields of literary translation and community translation. Her current research includes international collaborations on online intercultural exchange projects and themes in Australian children’s literature. She has supervised numerous PhD projects across various areas of Translation Studies, including trauma translation and audiovisual translation, and is actively involved in research addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
