Biography

S. Shankar Sastry is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. He has also served as the Director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), which spans multiple campuses including UC Berkeley, Davis, Merced, and Santa Cruz. From 2001 to 2004, he was the Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley. Before this, he held positions at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Electronics Research Laboratory at Berkeley. Sastry completed his PhD at UC Berkeley in 1981 and has held faculty positions at institutions such as MIT and Harvard University. His research interests include resilient network control systems, cybersecurity, autonomous unmanned systems, computer vision, nonlinear adaptive control, and hybrid embedded systems, focusing on critical infrastructure protection. He has supervised numerous doctoral and master's students, many of whom have taken on leadership roles in prestigious universities around the world.
