Biography

Shannon McMullen is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Art & Design and American Studies at Purdue University. She received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego in 2007. McMullen engages in social inquiry at the intersection of nature, art, and technology, a practice defined as critical speculative gardening. She collaborates with fellow Associate Professor Fabian Winkler to create new media installations that respond to emerging forms of algorithmic visual culture and the politics of nature. Her creative projects have been exhibited internationally in venues such as the Science Gallery in Dublin, the Art Center Nabi in Seoul, and the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. Her work has received funding from the National Science Foundation and the Mellon Foundation, as well as Purdue University. In addition to her creative endeavors, McMullen utilizes artistic material culture strategies within interdisciplinary social science research projects to provide experiential learning and develop experimental methods for communicating findings.
