Biography

Prior to joining the faculty, Shannon D.M. Moore taught social studies and English in the public school system. She completed her PhD in 2014 at the University of British Columbia, where her dissertation, titled "Producing Pedagogy," explored how youth understand masculinities, femininities, and sexualities conveyed through visual and digital media. Drawing from her K-12 teaching experience, she teaches courses in media education, social studies education, social justice pedagogy, and research methodologies. Her research interests focus on media literacies, the impacts of neoliberal reforms on public education, and hockey culture. Currently, she is co-conducting a SSHRC-funded study titled 'We Interrupt this Programming' with Dr. Jennifer Watt, which examines how schools and educational systems respond to gender-based sexual violence at professional and policy levels. Furthermore, she actively engages with issues surrounding hockey masculinities and has been invited to speak at the House of Commons' Standing Committee on the Status of Women. Shannon is also involved in planning the Hockey Conference 2025 in Winnipeg and serves as the managing editor of the Manitoba Social Science Teachers' Association Journal. In addition, she co-hosts a podcast focused on public education and is a founding member of People for Public Education. She recently co-edited a special issue titled 'Defending and Strengthening Public Education as the Common Good: Cross-Border Advocacy' in the journal Critical Education. Her recent publications include collaborative works addressing feminist teacher leadership and advocacy in Canadian education.
