Biography

Shaowen Wang is a Professor and Head of the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is also a Richard Margaret Romano Professorial Scholar and serves as Affiliate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He was the Founding Director of the CyberGIS Center for Advanced Digital Spatial Studies at UIUC from 2013, and has held various positions, including Associate Director of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications from 2010 to 2017. His research interests include Geographic Information Science (GIS), advanced cyberinfrastructure, and cyberGIS, focusing on complex environmental geospatial problems and computational data sciences. Throughout his career, he has actively supported numerous U.S. government agencies such as the CDC, DOE, EPA, NASA, and NSF. Wang has served as principal investigator for multi-institution projects sponsored by the NSF, published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, and has been involved in editorial work for various journals. He has received multiple awards, including the NSF CAREER Award in 2009.
