Shaoyi Jiang joined the Meinig School as Robert Langer ’70 Family Friends Professor in June 2020. Prior to Cornell, he was the Boeing-Roundhill Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and an adjunct professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington, Seattle. Jiang pioneered molecular understanding and design of functional zwitterionic materials. In the early 2000s, his group proposed the concept of super-hydrophilic zwitterionic materials and provided molecular-level understanding of non-fouling mechanisms, developing new classes of zwitterionic materials, including poly(carboxybetaine) and poly(sulfobetaine). Their work demonstrated significant applications such as capsule formation in subcutaneous implantation models and the development of environmentally benign marine coatings. Jiang's work has led to over 50 awarded patents and the co-founding of companies ZWI Therapeutics and Taproot Medical. His current research focuses on integrating immunology with biomaterials for drug delivery and aims to translate these technologies into medical engineering practices. His research interests include Biomolecular Engineering, Nanotechnology, and Tissue Engineering among others, with teaching interests in Biomaterials and Molecular Modeling.
