Biography

Sharad Chari is a geographer whose work interrogates the intersections of geography and critical theory, especially within the contexts of the Global South. He completed his Ph.D. in Geography at the University of California, Berkeley. Chari has held academic positions at the London School of Economics, where he was a Lecturer in Human Geography, and at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa as an Associate Professor in the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa. His research focuses on topics such as labor, political economy, racial/sexual capitalism, and the agrarian question, particularly within South Asia and South Africa. He is the author of significant works including 'Fraternal Capital: Peasant-Workers, Self-Made Men and Globalization in Provincial India' and 'Gramsci Sea,' which explores oceanic Marxism in relation to imperialism. His forthcoming book, 'Apartheid Remains,' seeks to understand the socio-political landscape of post-apartheid South Africa through the lens of biopolitics and environmental struggles. In addition to his academic pursuits, he is involved in various collaborative projects that weave together his interests in radical geography, socio-economic history, and the environmental implications of capitalism.
