Biography

Sharla Rent is a neonatologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University. She is also an Assistant Research Professor with the Duke Global Health Institute. Her research concentrates on critical areas such as perinatal bereavement, the stigma associated with stillbirth and neonatal death, neonatal resuscitation in low-resource settings, and database analysis of perinatal outcomes. Sharla completed her Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital from 2016 to 2019. She previously served her residency in Pediatrics at Saint Louis University and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital from 2013 to 2016. Sharla holds an M.D. from Loyola University of Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine, awarded in 2013. She is actively involved in research initiatives such as the project ‘Supporting Families after Perinatal Loss in Tanzania,’ funded by the National Palliative Care Research Center from 2022 to 2024. Sharla has also held appointments as an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics and has experience as a Medical Instructor in the same department.
