Biography

Dr. Sharmila Masli is an Associate Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which ocular antigen-presenting cells (APCs) regulate inflammatory ocular immune responses. Notably, her laboratory investigates the role of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) in ocular inflammation. Dr. Masli's lab has identified a spontaneous development of autoimmune Sjögren’s syndrome-related ocular inflammation in TSP-1 deficient mice, closely resembling clinical symptoms observed in human Sjögren’s patients. Her projects address the immunologic mechanisms underlying disease development in mice, contributing to our understanding of ocular diseases. In addition to her research, Dr. Masli serves as a primary mentor for graduate students in the Graduate Medical Sciences program. She has been involved in multiple grant-funded projects that explore various aspects of ocular health and diseases, particularly in the context of immunology and inflammation. Dr. Masli's commitment to scientific discovery is matched by her dedication to educating the next generation of scientists and medical professionals.
