Dr. Sharon Freedman

Biography

Sharon Fridovich Freedman is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University, where she serves as Division Chief for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Her current research interests focus on childhood glaucomas, where she evaluates existing and new management strategies for treating refractory congenital childhood glaucomas. She collaborates with colleagues at Duke to study the genetics of pediatric glaucoma. As the principal investigator for a NIH-sponsored multi-center trial on retinopathy of prematurity (ETROP), she actively engages in clinical research aimed at improving eye care for premature infants. Freedman is involved in research concerning new imaging techniques for retinal disorders and is exploring the role of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs in treating severe ROP. In addition to her research contributions, she regularly lectures and directs workshops at national meetings to educate ophthalmologists on current strategies and controversies in managing these conditions. Freedman's commitment to advancing the understanding and treatment of pediatric eye disorders underscores her significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology.
