Dr. Sharon Gewirtz

Biography

Sharon Gewirtz is a professor of education at King's College London, where she co-directs the Centre for Public Policy Research. She has held various positions, including head of the School of Education, Communication & Society, and director of research in the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. Gewirtz, an elected fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences, served on the sub-panel for education in the UK Research Excellence Framework in 2021. Her academic career began at the Open University, where she worked as a lecturer and researcher in social policy. Her research focuses on the intersection of sociology and education, particularly addressing issues of equality and social justice in education policy and practice. Gewirtz's ongoing projects aim to investigate the vocational education training system in England and how it affects education-to-work transitions for young people, especially those who do not go to university. Through her research, she contributes to debates on public service accountability, professional standards in education, and the systemic barriers to equity in educational opportunities. She supervises doctoral students and teaches on various courses related to social sciences and education policy.
