Biography

Sharon Hayes is an artist whose work utilizes video, performance, sound, and public sculpture to highlight specific intersections of history, politics, and speech. Aiming to unravel reductive historical narratives, her work seeks to reignite dormant pathways that lead to counter-understandings of the contemporary political condition. The projects she creates linger in various grammars—linguistic, affective, and sonic—through acts of political resistance. Hayes’ practice fosters conversation and acts as a collective force, resonating within the heterogeneous field of voices and practices that challenge normative behaviors and complicit agreements in our society. Notable recent works include her two-channel video installation 'Ricerche: four', which features interviews with LGBTQIA elders from various locations. This work has been exhibited at the 2024 Whitney Biennial. Throughout her career, Hayes has held numerous solo exhibitions in prestigious venues including the Neue Berliner Kunstverein in Berlin, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She has received numerous awards such as the Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Award and the Guggenheim Fellowship. Currently, she teaches in the Department of Fine Arts at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, where she has been a faculty member since 2015.
