Biography

Sharon Mosher served as the Dean Emeritus of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin from 2009 to 2020. Her academic journey began with a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1978, following a Master of Science from Brown University in 1975. Mosher's research focuses primarily on structural geology, structural petrology, and tectonics, with significant contributions to the understanding of deformation along plate boundaries and the evolution of complexly deformed terranes. Over her career, she has supervised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and has held various leadership roles, including chairing the Department of Geological Sciences and the Council of Scientific Society Presidents. Her professional accolades include the Distinguished Service Award from the Geological Society of America in 2003 and the Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal from the American Geosciences Institute in 2020. Mosher is also a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and has made numerous contributions to geoscience education and outreach.
