Biography

Sharon Wood is a professor in the Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. She has served as the dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering and as the provost of the university. Wood began her academic career as an assistant professor and later an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During her time in Illinois, she spent a year as a visiting associate professor at the University of Washington before joining UT Austin. As dean, she championed a hands-on, project-based learning model, launched multiple online master's degree programs in mechanical and electrical engineering, and opened a 430,000-square-foot multidisciplinary engineering building on campus. Wood is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a past president of the American Concrete Institute. She is recognized nationally for her research in earthquake response and reinforced structures and has served on various federal advisory committees.
