Biography

Shaun gained his PhD from the University of Glasgow for his investigation into the regulation of cell division. He moved to the University of Strathclyde as a Postdoctoral Researcher, studying how glucose transporter trafficking is altered in type 2 diabetes. In 2023, Shaun joined the School of Molecular Biosciences as a lecturer. During his PhD, Shaun became familiar with laboratory techniques and model organisms to study cell biology, undertaking a large genetic screen using fission yeast to identify novel targets related to cell division. He utilized human cell lines and in vitro techniques to further profile his discoveries. Shaun's postdoctoral research focused on understanding cellular systems altered in type 2 diabetes, developing a depth of knowledge in molecular genetic methods, including gene editing (CRISPR), radioactive glucose assays, and immunoblotting techniques. He is currently interested in profiling traditional herbal medicine using fission yeast while also focusing on the scholarship of pedagogy, particularly in the context of decolonising curricula in molecular biology through innovative teaching methods to enhance student engagement and attainment.
