Biography

Shauna Janssen is an interdisciplinary artist-researcher, curator, performance designer, and educator based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal, on the unceded lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. She serves as the Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Pedagogy in the Faculty of Fine Arts and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at Concordia University. Janssen's research and creative practice encompass performative, site-specific, intersectional, and socially-engaged approaches to performance creation. A former Concordia University Research Chair in Performative Urbanism from 2018 to 2023, she is deeply involved in projects intersecting urban change, spatial politics, and community engagement through performance. With twenty years of experience in the professional arts, her practice includes creating contemporary Canadian theatre, opera, and dance. Currently, her research focuses on dramaturgy and the creation of new media performance along with critical engagements in queer feminist production. She regularly supervises graduate students in interdisciplinary performance and has presented lectures and workshops internationally.
