Biography

Shauntay Grant is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Dalhousie University, residing in Kjipuktuk, Mi’kma’ki (Halifax, Nova Scotia). A poet, playwright, and interdisciplinary artist, her work focuses on celebrating and uncovering African Nova Scotian and African diasporic histories. Grant has created numerous children's literature works, drawing from her ancestral ties to Black Loyalists, Jamaican Maroons, and Black Refugees in Nova Scotia. She has received various accolades, including the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize for Writing and Publishing from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Robert Merritt Award for her stage play 'Bridge.' Her notable books include the children's picture book 'Wrap Hair' and she is a co-founder of the Erasure Art Collective, which focuses on reinterpreting archival texts through artistic expression. Grant’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Inaugural Black Artist Recognition Award from Arts Nova Scotia, and she has served as Poet Laureate for the City of Halifax. Her contributions to literature and theatre highlight the intersection of identity, culture, and arts education, marking her as a significant figure in contemporary Canadian arts.
