Dr. Shawn Cowper

Biography

Shawn Cowper, MD, is a Professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine. He specializes in diagnosing skin diseases, particularly focusing on hair loss and conditions related to nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). Dr. Cowper's interest in dermatopathology developed during his time as a fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, where he co-discovered NSF, a condition linked to the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents in MRI. His research has significantly impacted clinical practices regarding the safety of contrast agents in patients with renal impairment. Dr. Cowper is known for his contributions to medical education, regularly teaching dermatology residents about histopathology.
