Biography

Shawn E. Cowper, MD, specializes in using microscopy to diagnose skin diseases and conditions, particularly focusing on alopecia. He co-authored a textbook titled Atlas of Hair Pathology and regularly fields alopecia-related questions from colleagues. His interest in dermatopathology, a subspecialty of pathology that focuses on skin biopsies, stems from his earlier experiences as a family physician treating various dermatologic conditions. Dr. Cowper played a significant role in the discovery of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), a condition linked to gadolinium-based contrast agents used in MRI procedures. His work has contributed to a dramatic decrease in NSF cases following regulatory guidelines. He routinely teaches dermatology residents and conducts research on pathological findings in hair loss and adnexal tumors. At Yale School of Medicine, he is also involved with the International NSF Registry, which helps to further clinical and basic science research into fibrosis.
