Shawn McDaniel is an Associate Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He directs Graduate Studies for the American Studies and Ethnicity program. His research explores intersections of Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx literary cultural studies with intellectual history. McDaniel's work delves into subjectivity, power, aesthetics, modernism, race, gender, sexuality, and dissidence, particularly in relation to print, visual, and sonic cultures of the Americas from the nineteenth century to the present. His book, 'Centenary Subjects: Race, Reason, Rupture in the Americas' (Vanderbilt University Press, 2021), critically analyzes overlooked racial anxieties and offers an epistemological view of the spiritual dimensions of cultural production. His recent publications include articles in Cuban Studies and Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, examining topics such as graphic and sonic culture in Cuban New York and race aesthetics in the work of Count François G. de Cisneros.
