Biography

Shaylene Nancekivell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba. She completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Waterloo in 2016, following a Master of Applied Science in Developmental Communication Science in 2012, and an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 2011 from the University of Western Ontario. Before joining the University of Manitoba, Dr. Nancekivell worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for three years. Her research primarily focuses on understanding the nature of conceptual representations, especially structured intuitive theories, with a current emphasis on how these concepts are contextualized for children and adults in digital environments. She also explores theories surrounding learning ownership. Dr. Nancekivell's work is supported by grants from NSERC and SSHRC, and she operates the Young Minds Research Lab where she mentors graduate students in both Master's and PhD programs.
