Shazia Choudhry is a Professor of Law at Wadham College, Oxford University, and an Academic Bencher and Associate Academic Fellow of Inner Temple. Her research focuses on gender, human rights, and violence against women, examining these dimensions from an interdisciplinary feminist perspective. Choudhry employs doctrinal, theoretical, and empirical methods in her work, which sits at the intersection of criminal law, human rights law, and family law. She has published three books, including a monograph (co-authored with Herring) titled 'European Human Rights and Family Law' (Hart, 2010), which provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the European Convention on Human Rights in substantive areas of family law. Additionally, she has edited 'Rights, Gender and Family Law' (Routledge-Cavendish, 2009) and the 'Cambridge Companion to Comparative Family Law' (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Her expertise has led to appointments such as Specialist Adviser to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights’ Inquiry into Violence against Women and the Domestic Abuse Bill. In 2024, she was nominated as the UK Government’s nominee for the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Choudhry is also involved in externally funded projects that address domestic abuse in India and family law responses to allegations of domestic abuse across Europe.
