Biography

Sheela Sathyanarayana is a Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington. She also serves as the Medical Director for the Newborn Nursery and conducts consultations in the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit. Her research focuses on endocrine disrupting chemicals, specifically the effects of phthalates and bisphenol on pregnancy and childhood health outcomes. She is the principal investigator of the Infant Development Environment Study, which investigates the impacts of phthalate exposures during pregnancy on child health. She leads the multi-center ECHO PATHWAYS study, a $35 million initiative examining both chemical and non-chemical stressors and their relation to children’s health outcomes. Dr. Sathyanarayana has served as the chair of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee and has been involved with the National Academies of Sciences in discussions regarding low dose toxicity of endocrine disrupting chemicals. Additionally, she mentors students in her research and teaches courses on toxicology and environmental epidemiology at the University.
