Biography

Professor Shelley Claridge specializes in Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Materials Chemistry, focusing on the structuring of soft matter at the nanoscale. Her research examines the behavior of functional groups in dimensionally confined environments, seeking to design new materials that leverage these structural motifs. A strong proponent of bioinspired approaches, she draws on the chemistry of phospholipids to create well-defined 2D polar/nonpolar boundaries similar to those found in cell membranes. This work enables a broad scope of chemistry fundamental to various biological functions. Claridge’s group is working on transforming molecules into striped phases, creating functional patterns at the nanometer scale. Her interdisciplinary team uses advanced techniques and facilities, including scanning probe microscopy, SEM, and fluorescence microscopy, to develop new instrumentation and enhance material properties, processability, and scalability. Claridge's innovative work has received various accolades, highlighting her role as a leader in materials chemistry research.
