Biography

Shelley Cobb is a professor in Film and a scholar of Feminist Media Studies with particular interests in women filmmakers and the dynamics of gender in popular culture, especially within Hollywood. Her research focuses on gender inequality in the film industry, exploring themes such as women’s authorship, race, class, and the adaptation of works into film. She completed her PhD at the School of Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia and holds postgraduate degrees from Chapman University, California, including an MA in English Comparative Literature, an MFA in Creative Writing, and a BA in English from the University of Southern California. Joining the University of Southampton in 2008, she has significantly contributed to the field through her leadership in several research projects including 'Calling Shots: Women Contemporary Film Culture UK', which aims to raise public awareness about the contributions of women to the British film industry from 2003 to 2015. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she also actively supervises PhD students in various topics related to women in film and contemporary Hollywood. Her editorial experience includes co-editing volumes and serving on the editorial board of journals such as Celebrity Studies. Cobb’s work not only sheds light on the historical implications of women in filmmaking but also seeks to contribute to ongoing discussions of equality and diversity in the media.
