Biography

Shelley Fisher Fishkin is the Joseph S. Atha Professor of Humanities at Stanford University, where she also directs the American Studies Program and serves as co-director of the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project. Fishkin has authored, edited, or co-edited forty-eight books and published over one hundred fifty articles, essays, and reviews, primarily focusing on race and racism in America and amplifying voices that have been silenced or marginalized. Her work has received numerous accolades, including awards from Choice, Library Journal, and the New York Public Library. She holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. Joining Stanford in 2003, she previously chaired the American Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research has gained significant attention, featuring prominently in the New York Times. In 2017, she received the John S. Tuckey Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Mark Twain Studies. Recently, Fishkin's scholarship was honored with the creation of the Shelley Fisher Fishkin Prize for International Scholarship in Transnational American Studies. Her latest project explores Hal Holbrook's portrayal of Mark Twain, and she is also preparing a new book titled 'Jim (Huckleberry Finn's Comrade)', set to be published in 2025. Fishkin's extensive professional involvement includes leadership roles in several academic organizations and keynote addresses at numerous international conferences.
