Biography

Shelley Fisher Fishkin is the Joseph S. Atha Professor of Humanities and a Professor of English at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of African and African American Studies. She holds a Ph.D., M.Phil, and M.A. in American Studies as well as a B.A. in English from Yale University. Over her extensive career, Fishkin has engaged deeply with issues of race and racism in America, focusing on marginalized voices and their contributions to American history and literature. Her interdisciplinary research includes American literature, transnational American Studies, feminist criticism, and the relationship between public and literary history. She has authored and edited over fifty books and published more than one hundred fifty articles, contributing significantly to the fields of American and African American literature. Fishkin’s recent work addresses the legacy of Mark Twain and centers around her book 'Jim: Life After Huckleberry Finn's Comrade'. She has received numerous accolades, including fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and Fulbright, and has been recognized with various teaching and scholarly awards throughout her career.
