Biography

Shelley Halpain received a B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Rockefeller University. She completed her postdoctoral training under the supervision of Professor Paul Greengard, a 2001 Nobel laureate in Physiology and Medicine. Prior to her current role, Halpain was faculty at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center from 1992-1996 and at the Scripps Research Institute from 1996-2007. In 2007, she became a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Halpain has served as a Council Delegate for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Section on Neuroscience from 1998-2000 and is a member of various national and international scientific review panels. She is a frequent contributor to scientific journals, and her research has been published in top scientific publications. Halpain's work focuses on the molecular basis of neural development, including neurite outgrowth and synapse formation, with applications to brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, mood disorders, and autism.
