Biography

Shelley Hulan grew up in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley and moved to Newfoundland, where she completed her bachelor's degree in English. She teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Waterloo and conducts research in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Canadian writing. Hulan has served as the chair of the English Department and has published extensively on topics related to Canadian literature. Some of her selected works include “Civility Fantasies of the Anglosphere,” published in English Studies in Canada, and various contributions in edited volumes that explore themes in Canadian literature. Her current research interests include the rhetoric of food scarcity in late colonial writing, the representation of nostalgia in literary texts, and early queer Canadian literatures. Hulan also actively supervises graduate students in the field of Canadian literature.
