Biography

Shengqiao Lin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). His research focuses on state–business relations with a regional emphasis on China. He studies how firms and individuals respond to government interventions such as regulation, industrial policy, and economic sanctions, and how these interactions shape governance outcomes. His work has been published or accepted in prominent journals including the Journal of Politics, Journal of Contemporary China, Asian Survey, and Issues & Studies. In 2023, he received the APSA Conference Paper Award and has been featured in various media outlets such as The Economist, The Diplomat, Initium Media, and Taiwan Insight. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University’s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and the Reimagining the Economy Project at the Center for International Development. He advocates for making social science accessible, having composed over 220 public-facing summaries of journal articles since 2020 and running an academic blog on Political Science that has garnered 1.8 million reads.
