Biography

Sheon Mary Samji is a Research Fellow at the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow, specializing in molecular biology with a focus on proteomics. With 12 years of academic research experience, her expertise spans protein mass spectrometry, cell and molecular biology, and biochemistry. She began her academic journey with a BSc and MSc in Biotechnology from the University of Pune in India, followed by a PhD in Biochemical Sciences at the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory in India, where she investigated proteomic patterns in pre-eclampsia. Since joining the University of Glasgow as a Newton International Fellow in 2018, funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society, she has worked as a scientist at Enzene Bioscience Ltd in India, managing teams to characterize therapeutic biosimilars and novel medicinal compounds. Her research interests revolve around understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular and renal diseases, particularly focusing on uromodulin, a protein linked to salt-sensitive hypertension and kidney function. She investigates the role of environmental factors such as salt, pregnancy, diabetes, heart failure, and hypertension in regulating cardiovascular health. Apart from her research, Dr. Samji is actively involved in mentoring PhD students and teaching courses on proteomics, contributing to promoting equality and mental health awareness within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health.
