Dr. Sherif El Tawil

Biography

Sherif El-Tawil is the Antoine E. Naaman Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on the mitigation of natural and man-made hazards, particularly in structural engineering and infrastructure resilience to extreme events such as earthquakes and blasts. El-Tawil employs computational modeling and simulation techniques, including agent-based models and virtual reality applications, to assess and improve the robustness of structural systems. He has published extensively in various leading journals and has received numerous awards for his research achievements, including the Shortridge Hardesty Award and the Arthur M. Wellington Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers. As a proactive member of the engineering community, he has served on several ASCE committees and is the past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Structural Engineering. His professional service extends to consulting for major government transportation agencies. Dr. El-Tawil has made significant contributions to the development of multiscale computational techniques for structural analysis and has been recognized for his excellence in teaching and research.
