Shermin De Silva received her PhD in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. She is a former NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at Colorado State University and has held various fellowships including Junior Life Sciences Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin and James Smithson Fellow at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. De Silva is the president and founder of Trunks & Leaves Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to evidence-based conservation of elephants and their habitats. Her research focuses on the socioecological dynamics between human and non-human societies, particularly how social systems influence ecological systems and vice versa. She studies animal behavior and the impact of anthropogenic activities on wildlife populations, particularly elephants, in relation to land-use and climate change. De Silva is interested in conservation interventions and their replicability across socioecological contexts, and she actively seeks to develop research that balances both basic and applied conservation aims. Currently, she aims to recruit PhD students for the Fall 2024 application period.
