Biography

Sherry Pictou is a Mi’kmaw woman from the Bear River Nation, Nova Scotia. She previously served as an Assistant Professor in the Women's Studies Department at Mount Saint Vincent University, focusing on Indigenous Feminism from 2017 to 2020. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Governance (Tier 2). Pictou has been involved in advocacy through roles such as Chief Community Co-Chair of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples and member of the IPBES Task Force on Indigenous Local Knowledge. Her research interests encompass decolonizing treaty relations, social justice for Indigenous women, and the role of Indigenous women in food systems. She leads a SSHRC Partnership Grant aimed at mobilizing research knowledge on gendered impacts of resource extraction on Indigenous communities in Canada. Pictou has contributed significant publications addressing Indigenous rights, governance, and food systems, highlighting the intersection of Indigenous feminism and environmental issues.
