Dr. Sherry Suyu

Biography

Sherry H. Suyu is a Professor of Observational Cosmology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and a Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics. Her research focuses on measuring the expansion rate of the Universe, probing the nature of dark energy, and studying the formation and evolution of galaxies and dark matter halos. She is an active leader in several significant programs, including H0LiCOW, which measures distances to gravitational lenses and provides strong lensing cosmological probes, and HOLISMOKES, which investigates the cosmology of supernova progenitors and lensed supernovae. Suyu completed her PhD at the California Institute of Technology in 2008 and has held research positions at the University of Bonn, the University of California Santa Barbara, and Stanford University. In 2016, she became a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and was appointed as an Assistant Professor at TUM as part of the Max Planck@TUM program. She has received multiple awards for her contributions to astronomy, including the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Medal and the Lancelot M. Berkeley − New York Community Trust Prize.
