Biography

Sheryl N. Hamilton is a Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication and the Department of Law and Legal Studies. She holds a J.D. in Law from the University of Saskatchewan (1988), an M.A. in Communication from Carleton University (1995), and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Concordia University (2000). Hamilton was a Canada Research Chair in Communication, Law, and Governance from 2003 to 2013 and is a Fellow of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada since 2014. Her current research focuses on exploring the interplay between senses, bodies, and media regulation within the context of ubiquitous disease threats. This includes analyzing public health handwashing campaigns and popular culture's media representations of disease risk. Hamilton's work also delves into contemporary genetic science issues, notably the concept of non-human personhood in a rapidly evolving legal landscape. She has numerous publications, including books and journal articles addressing themes such as communication, law, and media's role in society.
