Biography

Based at Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley campus, Sheryl Root serves as an Associate Professor of Practice in the M.S. Software Management program. She develops curriculum and teaches courses that merge technology and entrepreneurship. Sheryl is the owner of RootAnalysis, a consulting firm specializing in corporate strategy and marketing. With over 13 years of experience, her firm has worked with C-level Silicon Valley executives at high-tech companies such as HP-Compaq, Oracle/PeopleSoft, Hyperion, Philips, and Novell, as well as various startup organizations. Prior to her academic career, Sheryl had a 20-year tenure in the software industry, excelling in numerous roles at Hewlett-Packard (HP), including Director of Business Strategy and Director of Marketing Operations Services. She has also led internal teams and worked with consultants to advance HP's software engineering and business management practices globally. Sheryl is a leader, board member, and advocate for world-renowned institutes and organizations, serving as Chairman of the Advisory Board for Women in Technology International (WITI) and as a board member for Netswitch Technology Management. Additionally, she frequently speaks on high-tech subjects such as agile marketing, strategy, women in STEM, career planning, and leadership. Outside of her professional work, Sheryl is a connoisseur of wines and has previously owned her own vineyard. She also has a passion for racing cars.
