Biography

Shijie Qi graduated from the Capital University of Medical Sciences with a medical degree (M.D.) in 1982. Specializing in general surgery, he practiced for 10 years. Qi is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and the principal investigator of an experimental microsurgery research protocol approved for organ transplantation. He came to Canada in 1991 as a research monitor for a study on human islet transplantation at the Montreal General Hospital (McGill University). Since then, he has specialized in organ transplantation and tissue engineering in reconstructive surgery. Qi has developed several animal models for organ transplantation across a range of species for the transplantation of heart, kidney, pancreas, intestine, liver, adrenal glands, ovaries, and limbs. He notably performed Canada’s first face transplant in rats and mice. His contributions have been recognized with an excellence award from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation for exemplary research on ischemia/reperfusion injury in organs. Qi's work has been highlighted by numerous national and international medical research agencies.
