Biography

Professor Shiliang Tian's research focuses on metalloproteins, which play crucial roles in fundamental biological processes such as cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and nitrogen fixation under mild conditions with high efficiency and selectivity. His lab operates at the intersection of physical, inorganic, and biological chemistry, employing a variety of spectroscopic and computational techniques to reveal the functions and mechanisms of metalloproteins. The insights gained from this research will enhance our understanding of the electronic and geometric structures of metalloproteins connected to their mechanistic roles in diseases and the development of effective therapeutic treatments. Professor Tian leads a multidisciplinary research group within the Department of Chemistry and the Purdue Institute of Integrative Neuroscience to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying complex biological systems. His goals include investigating the roles of metal ions in neurodegenerative diseases, the design of functional metalloproteins for biosynthetic and biotechnological applications, and understanding the molecular basis of magnetoreception.
