Biography

Shilo McBurney is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Brown University’s School of Public Health, where he also leads the Epidemiology Concentration for students in the Master of Public Health program. His research interests concentrate on applied epidemiology, focusing on public health surveillance interventions, vaccine-preventable infectious diseases, and data validation. He is keen on innovative education and has expertise in developing instructional strategies and curricula specifically in applied public health. Shilo aims to foster scientific literacy and critical thinking among students, as well as develop practices for effectively communicating complex scientific concepts to stakeholders, thereby driving public health policy change. He received his MSc in Epidemiology and Community Health from Dalhousie University in 2016 and completed his PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto in 2022 with a Collaborative Specialization in Public Health Policy. His doctoral dissertation evaluated pertussis detection using health administrative surveillance data and was funded by the CIHR Doctoral Research Award. Before his PhD, Shilo practiced public health as a Provincial Cancer Surveillance Epidemiologist in Prince Edward Island, focusing on evaluation of screening programs and continued working in cancer surveillance and screening evaluations in Rhode Island, collaborating closely with the local Department of Health.
