Biography

Shimelis Kene holds a Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) from McGill University and has an LL.M with honors from Northwestern University, where he was awarded the Fellowship in International Legal Studies. He also completed his LL.B at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. Before joining Western University, he was a Visiting Fellow at the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism. Shimelis actively engages in discussions at local and international conferences on topics pertinent to his research areas. His ongoing research employs a socio-legal approach, examining the role of international law in North-South encounters. His research interests span several fields, including Public International Law, International Human Rights, International Criminal Law, Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), Law and Society, and Postcolonial Theory. Shimelis has previously worked with organizations such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Office of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Ethiopian Federal Instance Court, and the Organization for Social Justice in Ethiopia.
