Dr. Shinobu Matsuura

Biography

Shinobu Matsuura is an Assistant Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. She obtained her DVM from Universidade de São Paulo and her PhD from the University of Tokyo. Her research primarily focuses on hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology and its implications in malignancies, particularly myeloproliferative neoplasms driven by the JAK2V617F mutation. Dr. Matsuura utilizes veterinary medicine expertise to employ animal models with significant translational potential in her research. She performs in-depth phenotyping of HSCs through analytical flow cytometry, transcriptomics, and in vivo functional studies, including bone marrow transplantation and in vitro studies of primary HSCs. Her commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is deeply rooted in her background as a Japanese immigrant raised in Brazil. As a minority academic, she strives to enhance representation and support for individuals from diverse backgrounds in science and medicine. Dr. Matsuura is dedicated to creating an inquisitive learning environment that nurtures curiosity and promotes mentorship.
