Biography

Dr. Shirley E. Thompson is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of American Studies. She obtained her Ph.D. in History with a focus on American Civilization from Harvard University in 2001. Her research interests include African American and African Diaspora Studies, nineteenth-century cultural history, law and literature, and slavery and post-emancipation cultures. Currently, she is working on a book project titled 'No Auction Block: African Americans and the Problem of Property', which delves into the legacies of slavery and the ways African Americans have interacted with the concept of property ownership throughout history. In addition to her current research, she has published the book 'Exiles Home: Struggle to Become American Creole', which explores the cultural history of New Orleans' French-speaking free people of color during the mid-nineteenth century. Dr. Thompson is also actively involved in teaching and mentoring students in various interdisciplinary methodologies and subjects relating to African American culture and history.
