Biography

Dr. Shirley M. Tsunoda is a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Associate Dean for Pharmacy Education at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of California, San Diego. She holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and has undergone extensive training including a residency in Pharmacy Practice and a post-doctoral fellowship in Pharmacokinetics/Drug Metabolism. Dr. Tsunoda’s research specializes in metabolomics and its application in understanding drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, particularly in relation to the gut microbiome, a field known as pharmacomicrobiomics. Her work spans numerous projects, including the investigation of antibiotic exposure's impact on the infant microbiome, the use of noninvasive techniques to monitor drug exposure, and studies on the effects of drugs on the composition of human milk. Dr. Tsunoda has received multiple awards for her teaching and research, including the Teacher of the Year Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. She is also actively involved in leadership roles, contributing to various academic and clinical pharmacy practices.
