Biography

Shirley Yen, PhD, is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University. She graduated with a BA from the University of Chicago and earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Duke University. Dr. Yen has dedicated over 20 years to research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), focusing on risk factors and interventions for suicidal behaviors among adolescents and adults. Her significant work includes longitudinal studies on bipolar disorder in youth, personality disorders in adults, and predictors of suicidal behavior. Dr. Yen leads efforts on transdiagnostic interventions for suicidal adolescents, and current projects include piloting an acceptance-based intervention for youth experiencing psychosis, as well as using yoga and text messaging to enhance coping skills in depressed adolescents. She is also investigating suicide risk mechanisms in sexual minority adolescents, demonstrating her commitment to advancing mental health interventions in diverse populations.
