Biography

Shirli Gilbert is a historian specializing in modern Jewish life with a particular interest in the legacies of the Holocaust, Jewish refugees in Africa, and the experience of Jews in South Africa. She obtained her D. Phil in Modern History from the University of Oxford and has held a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Society of Fellows at the University of Michigan. Prior to her current role at University College London, she served as a Professor of Modern History and Director of the Parkes Institute for Jewish/non-Jewish Relations at the University of Southampton. Gilbert is also an editor for the 'Jewish Historical Studies: Journal of English-Speaking Jewry.' In addition to her academic pursuits, she leads the Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre, which aims to make historical research accessible to a wide, non-academic audience.
