Dr. Shivani Misra

Biography

Shivani Misra is a Clinical Associate Professor and Honorary Consultant Physician in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction at Imperial College London. Her research team focuses on enhancing diabetes care by harnessing the diversity observed in ancestry groups to tailor treatment and prevention of type 2 and type 1 diabetes. She has a core focus on early-onset type 2 diabetes, which involves individuals diagnosed before 40 years, and is characterized by a reduced life expectancy of 10-20 years. Dr. Misra's research group concentrates on three main areas: 1) Big data analysis of early-onset type 2 diabetes and ethnic differences; 2) Observational cohort studies that analyze diabetes classification and genetic variation among ethnic groups; and 3) Physiological studies examining differences in beta-cell function and ectopic fat. Her group has provided nationwide estimates of early-onset type 2 diabetes in England through the National Diabetes Audit (NDA), highlighting significant inequalities among younger adults based on ethnicity and deprivation. Funded by organizations such as the Wellcome Trust and Diabetes UK, Dr. Misra serves as a Clinical Advisor for the NHS England T2DAY program, which aims to enhance care for individuals diagnosed with early-onset type 2 diabetes. In 2023, she was awarded the Precision Medicine Diabetes Prize by the European Study for the Association of Diabetes and serves as Co-Chair of the Precision Medicine Diabetes Consortium.
