Shlomi Steinberg is an Assistant Professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo. His research focuses on computer graphics and computational optics, particularly in the realm of physical light transport. Steinberg is dedicated to bridging the gap between rendering and wave optics, and aims to realize a cohesive computational theory that enables the simulation of wave-optical behavior of light in complex real-world scenes and environments. He is the maintainer of Wave Tracer, a wave simulation software designed to simulate entire virtual environments, akin to a 'metaverse', allowing objects to be sensed through various means such as eyes, cameras, RADAR, and non-imaging sensors. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and received the NVIDIA Ph.D. Fellowship for the 2022-2023 academic year. Steinberg completed his M.Sc. degree at the Weizmann Institute of Science under the supervision of Professor David Harel, where his research centered on the efficient execution and distribution of formally-verifiable software paradigms. Before his academic career, he worked as a rendering engineer on CRYENGINE, contributing to the successful AAA video game HUNT Showdown.
